About
The history of the company goes back to 1934, when the brothers TE and Paul Whitlock struck a partnership and painted post offices all over mountains of Virginia and West Virginia, and opened an office in Roanoke. At the end of the Depression, they were told that they had made more money than anyone in town in Pulaski except one doctor, who made just a little bit more. Their total was $10,000.
1949 - The company became a WACO Scaffolding dealer.
1950 - The two brothers split; Paul went to Florida and became one of the biggest WACO Scaffolding dealers in the country.
1951 - TE bought a store on High Street in Portsmouth. The company got completely out of contracting, going strictly for the sale and rental of scaffolding and began the rental of small construction equipment. This corresponded to an explosion in the invention of new types of light construction equipment. From that time on, hte company changed so that by 1976 it was moving into materials. The very first slab material was wire. Since then, as new products have come on the market, the company has followed a flexible policy of exploring construction trends to include new materials, products, and equipment.
1966 - The company built a store in Norfolk, VA, and Glenn Whitlock began as Manager of the Norfolk Store. When TE retired, and the current manager of Whitlock Brothers left the company, Glenn became President and Chief Executive Officer.
1971 - Whitlock Brothers expanded to Newport News, VA with Jim Bramble as the Manager.
1981 - Chuck Olsen became Manager of the Newport News store.
1993 - Whitlock Brothers purchased the store property in Newport News, Derek Elkins became Store Manager, and Chuck Olsen became General Manager of the company.
2004 - Whitlock Brothers expanded to Toano, VA, with Kevin Hayes as Store Manager.
